PELALAWAN – PT Sari Lembah Subur (SLS), a palm oil plantation company, is reinforcing its commitment to environmental awareness among youth. SLS partnered with Pangkalan Lesung 1 Junior High School to deliver an educational program on forest and land fire prevention, plastic waste reduction, and tree planting.
The initiative seeks to inspire environmentally conscious youth to become agents of positive change in their communities.
“We would like to express our sincere appreciation to PT SLS for organising this forest fire prevention awareness program at our school. This activity has provided valuable knowledge for our students on early prevention measures, emergency response, and the confidence and skills needed to deal with hazardous situations, particularly fires,” said Nur Afni, Principal of Pangkalan Lesung 1 Junior High School.
She praised PT SLS for providing practical, relevant environmental education that benefits students and addresses current environmental challenges. Nur Afni also expressed hope that the partnership would continue through future educational initiatives.
“We hope PT SLS will continue collaborating with us on other meaningful programs that benefit both students and the wider community. We wish PT SLS continued success and growth,” she added.
During the program, students learned about the main causes of forest and land fires, their effects on the environment, public health, and local communities, and early preventive measures.
The PT SLS outreach team also emphasized the importance of avoiding land clearing by burning and explained how to report signs of fire in the area.
Students also learned about the environmental impacts of single-use plastics. Interactive sessions encouraged them to adopt sustainable habits, such as using reusable water bottles and shopping bags, and reducing single-use plastic packaging.
The program concluded with a tree planting activity on the school grounds. Students learned about the essential role of trees in maintaining ecosystem balance, absorbing carbon dioxide, preventing soil erosion, and preserving groundwater.
Tofan Hidayat, Sustainability Assistant at PT SLS, stated that educating youth about environmental protection is a long-term investment in a sustainable future.
“Through this initiative, PT Sari Lembah Subur remains committed to promoting environmental awareness, particularly among young people. Education on forest and land fire prevention, plastic waste reduction, and environmental conservation through tree planting represents concrete action toward creating a greener and more sustainable future,” he said.
Tofan also expressed hope that students from Pangkalan Lesung 1 Junior High School would become pioneers of positive environmental change.
“The younger generation plays a crucial role in preserving the environment. We hope these students will become agents of change who inspire their families and communities to adopt more environmentally responsible behaviours,” he added.
The program included a practical fire suppression simulation for common household fire scenarios. Students learned about fire hazards such as gas stoves, electrical short circuits, and open burning of waste, as well as basic firefighting techniques using simple equipment and portable fire extinguishers (APAR).
Through these activities, PT SLS aims to strengthen collaboration with schools and local communities to create a healthier, greener, and more sustainable environment, while supporting early forest and land fire prevention across Pelalawan Regency.
