In many villages, small businesses often emerge from home kitchens, backyards, or simple ideas pursued with perseverance. Despite their modest beginnings, these enterprises hold significant potential to drive not only household economies but also local communities. With the right support—ranging from mentoring and training to market access—these businesses can grow into stronger and more sustainable sources of livelihood.
This momentum is now being experienced by MSME players in Mulya Subur Village, Pelalawan Regency. Through the Astra Kreatif program, local communities are gaining opportunities to develop businesses that were previously run on a small scale. The program provides not only assistance but also continuous mentoring, enabling entrepreneurs to improve product quality, enhance packaging, and better understand broader marketing strategies.
During the mentoring process, business owners are encouraged to reassess the potential of their village. Local products, such as homemade processed foods that were once marketed on a limited basis, are now being introduced with more appealing presentations and higher added value. This has fostered renewed optimism within the community, reinforcing the belief that their small businesses can grow further.
This MSME development initiative is part of the broader community empowerment commitment by PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk (Astra Agro), implemented through its subsidiaries across various operational areas. In Pelalawan Regency, the program is carried out with the active involvement of PT Sari Lembah Subur (SLS), which directly supports local business groups.
The company provides support ranging from capacity building and improved product packaging design to marketing strategies aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of MSME products in local markets. One example is the development of local tempeh chips, which are now presented with stronger branding and more attractive packaging.
A company representative stated that the program was initiated in response to the aspirations of the village community to improve the quality of their businesses. “We hope that through product development and packaging improvements, village MSMEs can enhance their competitiveness, expand into wider markets, and ultimately improve community welfare,” a PT SLS management representative said.
For the local community, such assistance goes beyond business improvement. Many MSME players who previously operated individually are now learning to collaborate in groups, sharing experiences, exchanging ideas, and working together to make their products more appealing to the market.
The head of the local MSME group also expressed gratitude for the support provided, noting that improvements in packaging and branding have increased their confidence in reaching broader markets. There is hope that such collaboration will continue, allowing village businesses to grow sustainably.
Over time, tangible changes have begun to emerge. Products that were once sold only within the local area are now gaining recognition beyond the village. More modern packaging creates a more professional impression, while entrepreneurs’ enthusiasm continues to grow as they see real results from their efforts.
This story demonstrates that village economic empowerment does not always have to begin with large-scale initiatives. Meaningful change can emerge from small, well-managed businesses. With the right support, village potential can evolve into a new economic force that benefits many.
