NORTH PENAJAM PASER – Hundreds of students, teachers, and staff from SMKN 4 North Penajam Paser took part in fire safety training and an emergency response simulation organized by PT Waru Kaltim Plantation (WKP) and the Waru District Fire Department. The program aimed to promote a culture of safety and improve the school community’s readiness for fire emergencies.
Participants received training on fire causes and prevention, firefighting equipment, hands-on use of portable fire extinguishers (APAR), techniques for extinguishing small fires with wet cloths, and live firefighting simulations with a fire engine.
Esti Dwi Lestari, Principal of SMKN 4 North Penajam Paser, welcomed the initiative and emphasized the need for students and educators to have practical knowledge and skills for effective emergency response.
“This training is extremely valuable for our school community because all students, teachers, and staff need a solid understanding of occupational health and safety, particularly fire prevention, initial fire response, the proper use of portable fire extinguishers, and emergency evacuation procedures. We hope this program will improve our preparedness and enable us to minimise potential casualties and property damage in the event of a fire,” she said.
Esti also expressed appreciation for the collaboration between PT WKP and the Waru District Fire Department. She noted that partnerships among the private sector, government agencies, and educational institutions offer students practical learning experiences and expand their knowledge beyond the classroom.
Miftahul Ulum, representing PT WKP management, explained that the program is part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives in education. The company aims to support educational quality and provide young people with practical life skills.
“We recognise that fires can occur anytime and anywhere, including in schools. Therefore, it is essential for students and educators to understand preventive measures, initial emergency response, and proper evacuation procedures,” he said.

Miftahul stated that the collaboration with the Waru District Fire Department is expected to foster a culture of safety from an early age. Beyond classroom instruction, participants gained hands-on experience to improve their preparedness and confidence in emergencies.
He added that PT WKP remains committed to CSR programs that benefit local communities, especially in education. The company hopes the training will equip students and teachers with practical knowledge and contribute to safer, more responsive school environments.
This commitment reflects Astra Agro’s sustainability spirit, “Synergy Between People and Nature for One Indonesia,” through initiatives that enhance educational quality and strengthen community resilience in facing local challenges.
In line with this commitment, PT WKP reaffirmed its Zero Fire policy as part of its sustainability strategy, ensuring no fires occur across its operations and supply chain.
These efforts are supported by collaboration with stakeholders, including the Plantation Agency, Forestry Agency, Indonesian National Police, Manggala Agni (Forest and Land Fire Brigade), and the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). Together, they ensure firefighting infrastructure, equipment, and personnel are ready in accordance with regulations for effective fire prevention and emergency response.
