To commemorate World Mangrove Day 2026, PT Perkebunan Lembah Bhakti (PT PLB), an Astra Agro subsidiary, planted 3,000 mangrove seedlings along the coastline of Kilangan Village, Singkil District, Aceh Singkil Regency, Aceh, on 28 July 2026.
The initiative reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to environmental conservation and supports efforts to strengthen the resilience of coastal ecosystems by collaborating with local stakeholders.
Cipta Wibawa, Vice President of Operations Area at PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk, stated that the mangrove planting programme forms part of Astra Agro’s long-term commitment to protecting the environment across its operational areas, including Aceh Singkil.
“We believe that conserving mangrove ecosystems is a long-term investment in environmental sustainability and the well-being of coastal communities,” said Cipta Wibawa.
Since 2018, PT PLB has consistently implemented mangrove restoration programmes across Aceh Singkil as part of its environmental stewardship initiatives.
The planting of 3,000 mangrove seedlings this year contributes to rehabilitating coastal ecosystems and provides ecological and socio-economic benefits for surrounding communities. Healthy mangrove forests protect shorelines from erosion, provide habitats for marine biodiversity, and strengthen coastal resilience against climate change impacts.
Cipta Wibawa emphasised that maintaining healthy mangrove ecosystems requires strong collaboration among government institutions, local communities, and the private sector to ensure these coastal forests continue to provide natural coastal protection while supporting diverse marine life.
Strengthening Collective Action for Coastal Conservation
Also attending the event, Hamzah Sulaiman, Vice Regent of Aceh Singkil, highlighted that World Mangrove Day is more than a ceremonial occasion. It is an opportunity to reinforce collective awareness of the importance of maintaining a harmonious relationship between people and nature.
“Today is an invitation to reflect on our relationship with nature. Amid the growing challenges of climate change, coastal erosion, and declining environmental quality, mangroves remain a natural defence that we must protect together,” he said.
He also encouraged all stakeholders to preserve Aceh Singkil’s mangrove forests as a shared legacy for future generations.
According to him, successful mangrove conservation cannot rely solely on government efforts. It requires strong partnerships involving local communities, businesses, academic institutions, environmental organisations, and younger generations.
The mangrove planting activity was attended by representatives from the Aceh Singkil Regional Police, the Aceh Singkil Regional Legislative Council (DPRK), the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda), local government agencies, district and village officials, community leaders, local fishermen, and PT PLB’s management and employees.
Through sustained mangrove restoration efforts, Astra Agro continues to contribute to protecting Indonesia’s coastal ecosystems while creating long-term environmental and social value for the communities living alongside them.
