Amid the increasingly complex industrial developments, understanding occupational safety has become a fundamental necessity rather than just an addition. This realization motivated PT Waru Kaltim Plantation (WKP), a subsidiary of PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk (AAL), to engage directly with the education sector. In collaboration with Penajam Paser Utara Vocational School (SMKN4) , PT WKP organized a briefing session on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) for 10th-grade students from various departments.
The enthusiasm in the Vocational school hall was palpable from the morning as students prepared to welcome insights from an industry they rarely encounter. During the hour-long session, the school atmosphere transformed into a discussion forum between industry professionals and aspiring young workers. Students from departments such as Fashion Design and Production, Culinary Arts, Visual Communication Design, Accounting, Geomatics, Construction and Housing Engineering, and Computer and Telecommunications Network Engineering participated eagerly, gaining practical information and insights into the workforce.
“This OHS material is very important for the students of Penajam Paser Utara Vocational Scool. It not only enhances their knowledge but also fosters a mindset that occupational safety is both a personal and collective responsibility,” stated Yuri Retno Ningsih, the Principal of Penajam Paser Utara Vocational School, on Tuesday (July 15). He expressed gratitude to PT WKP for their presence and for providing relevant training to the students.
The briefing encompassed not only technical material but also stressed individual responsibility for maintaining safety in the workplace. PT WKP encourages students to think critically, recognize potential hazards, and cultivate a culture of responsibility from an early age. The content was delivered in a practical manner, enabling students to understand theoretical concepts and apply them in real-world scenarios in their future careers.
This initiative aligns with PT WKP’s commitment through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program in the education sector, which is a continuous effort to contribute to human resource development in its operational areas. PT WKP believes that the industry’s success greatly depends on the quality of the workforce managing the processes. This quality begins with the right mindset regarding safety, work ethics, and environmental stewardship.
Eko Andrianto, an administrator at PT WKP, emphasized that this training is not just an annual event but part of the company’s long-term commitment to education. “We believe that education and occupational safety are the two main pillars that must go hand in hand. This activity provides insights to students and teachers alike about the business world and the workplace, particularly regarding OHS,” he explained.
Eko further stated that PT WKP will continue to support Penajam Paser Utara Vocational School and other schools as part of the company’s contribution to the future of young generations in their operational areas.
This initiative enriches the classroom experience and fosters awareness that working involves more than just meeting job requirements; it also encompasses saving lives, maintaining processes, protecting others, and ensuring sustainability. In every form of work, regardless of size, safety must be the top priority.
Through this OHS learning activity, PT WKP aims to instill essential values in young minds preparing to enter the workforce. The underlying belief is that success at work is not solely measured by results achieved but also by employing safe, healthy, and responsible working methods. When these values are nurtured from an early age, the future of Indonesia’s industry will be supported by a generation that is not only academically intelligent but also safety-conscious in every aspect of their work.
