PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk, through its subsidiaries in Pasangkayu Regency, West Sulawesi, planted 200 mangrove seedlings as part of the company’s commitment to conserving coastal ecosystems while strengthening climate change mitigation efforts. The initiative also continues the company’s long-term mangrove restoration program, under which approximately 40,000 mangrove trees have been planted since 2023.
Held to commemorate World Mangrove Day, the activity brought together all PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk entities operating in Pasangkayu, including PT Tanjung Sarana Lestari, PT Mamuang, PT Letawa, PT Pasangkayu, PT Lestari Tani Teladan, PT Suryaraya Lestari, and PT Bhadra Sukses.
The mangrove planting initiative forms part of the company’s broader sustainability commitment to protecting coastal ecosystems, which play a vital role in preventing coastal erosion, preserving biodiversity, and serving as natural carbon sinks.
Company Management representative Rendy H. Prabowo emphasised that environmental conservation is an integral part of sustainable oil palm plantation practices. According to him, the company is committed not only to maintaining productivity but also to ensuring a balanced approach that integrates economic, social, and environmental considerations.
Rendy stated that the mangrove planting activity represents the company’s tangible commitment to preserving coastal areas while fostering greater public awareness of the importance of protecting mangrove ecosystems.
“Mangroves not only protect coastlines from erosion but also provide habitats for diverse marine and coastal species while contributing to carbon sequestration. We hope this initiative will be a small step that creates a lasting positive impact on the environment and future generations,” said Rendy.
Echoing this sentiment, Company Management representative Riki Agusrinaldi noted that World Mangrove Day is an important opportunity to strengthen collaboration among the private sector, government, and local communities to promote sustainable natural resource management. He emphasised that meaningful environmental conservation can only be achieved through the active participation of all stakeholders.
Riki added that mangrove ecosystems provide significant environmental and socio-economic benefits, particularly for communities whose livelihoods depend on coastal resources.
“We believe sustainability is achieved not only through responsible business operations but also through concrete actions such as mangrove planting. By working together with local communities and stakeholders, we aim to ensure that coastal ecosystems remain healthy and resilient for future generations,” Riki said.
Through this initiative, PT Mamuang and PT Letawa hope to raise public awareness of the importance of protecting mangrove forests as natural barriers safeguarding coastal areas.
The initiative also reflects PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk’s commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to protecting terrestrial ecosystems and taking action to combat climate change.
