PT Karya Tanah Subur (KTS), a palm oil plantation company, has successfully developed a biochar-based organic fertiliser from palm shell waste that improves soil quality and pH.
This cost-effective and environmentally friendly innovation was identified through collaborative research between PT KTS and the Faculty of Agriculture at Teuku Umar University (UTU) in Meulaboh.
Research conducted at the University Farm and UTU Soil Science Laboratory from April to November 2025 produced positive results.
Fertiliser made from palm kernel shells proved more effective at improving soil pH than alternatives such as rice husks, coconut husks, coconut shells, or corn cobs.
PT KTS Administrator Halik Barutu stated that this innovation advances the sustainable management of palm oil industry waste.
“Organic fertiliser fro“Organic fertilizer from palm kernel shell waste may still be unfamiliar to the public, but it offers strong sustainability benefits and has been scientifically validated. We hope the public will adopt its use in the future,” said Halik on Friday (27/2/2026). Shells act as an ameliorant, improving the soil’s physical, chemical, and biological properties. This material makes the soil looser, reduces acidity, retains water and provides food for soil microorganisms. Trials of this fertiliser have been conducted on bean plants with good results.
PT KTS CSR Assistant Ashar Khoirurrozi added that this program demonstrates the company’s commitment to environmental and social sustainability.
“This initiative supports not only the company’s sustainability, but also that of local communities and ecosystems. We hope it will be widely adopted,” explained Ashar.
Meanwhile, Nurliani, a researcher from UTU, expressed appreciation for PT KTS’s support. She encouraged the community to adopt organic palm kernel shell fertiliser, noting its affordability, availability, and proven long-term benefits for soil health and fertility.
