PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk. (AALI) is implementing an Environmental Education Program in its partner schools through the Regional Curriculum for Palm Oil Plantation Environmental Education (Mulok PLKS).
PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk. (AALI) is a palm oil and crude palm oil (CPO) company dedicated to promoting environmental sustainability and biodiversity. As part of this commitment, the company has implemented an Environmental Education Program in partner schools through the Local Content of Palm Oil Plantation Environmental Education (Mulok PLKS).
In alignment with the government’s initiative to enhance educational development strategies via local content curricula, Astra Agro Lestari has partnered with leading educational organizations to instill ethical values in its affiliate schools. This initiative encourages these schools to contribute to the protection of their local environmental ecosystems.
The program includes several concrete actions that partner schools can implement, such as waste management using the 5R system (reduce, reuse, recycle, replace, replant), education on areas of high conservation value, endemic plant species, and protected animal species, as well as fire prevention education and tree planting activities within schools.
As of 2024, the Astra Agro PLKS Local Content Program has been implemented in 194 schools, involving 2,359 teachers and 49,251 students. The tree planting initiatives carried out under the PLKS Local Content Program have led to significant achievements, including the Adiwiyata School title awarded by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) for demonstrating a commitment to environmental stewardship.
Susila Darma Wati, Astra Agro Lestari’s Vice President of Sustainability, emphasized that through collaboration with the education sector, the company aims to instill conservation values and environmental responsibility from a young age. This approach ensures that youth in operational areas develop into changemakers who actively protect and preserve ecosystems, in alignment with the company’s sustainability principles and vision.
For Astra Agro, sustainability begins with awareness, which must be cultivated through education. Through the Local Content of PLKS, Astra Agro is actively imparting knowledge and fostering a spirit of ecosystem protection among students. “This is a crucial step in raising a generation that not only understands but also cares about and actively participates in preserving biodiversity in their environment,” she remarked on Thursday, October 30, 2025.
As of 2024, five schools have received the Adiwiyata Mandiri award, ten schools have earned the Adiwiyata Nasional award, three have been honored with the Adiwiyata Provinsi award, and six have received the Adiwiyata Kabupaten award. These schools serve as exemplars for the Adiwiyata program for an additional 194 schools across 12 districts. Notable winners among the supported schools include SDS Harapan Sejahtera and SMP Indah Makmur in Central Kalimantan, both recognized as Independent Adiwiyata Schools by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.
Dwi Ardi Irawan, Principal of SDS Harapan Sejahtera, stated that the school is fully committed to educating students about sustainability as part of its environmental conservation mission. “We actively initiate tree planting, engaging students, other schools, the community, and corporate support in these efforts,” said Dwi Ardi. In 2024, a total of 3,965 trees were successfully planted through collaboration among employees, local communities, and students.
Astra Agro recognizes the importance of community involvement in supporting biodiversity conservation in palm oil plantation areas. Therefore, the company actively collaborates with local communities, village governments, and relevant agencies such as the Forestry Department and the Agriculture Department.
These efforts demonstrate the company’s commitment to fostering strong synergies among various stakeholders to achieve sustainable environmental management. As part of its Sustainability Commitment, Astra Agro is dedicated to protecting High Conservation Value (HCV) areas, which include natural habitats with significant ecological or cultural value, as well as High Carbon Stock (HCS) forests. Astra Agro’s Sustainability Commitment is communicated throughout the entire supply chain, which is also required to align with these principles.
