PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk (Astra Agro), has been recognized with the Green Achievement in Emission Reduction and the Diamond Achievement in Emission Transparency awards during The Best Corporate Emission Reduction Transparency Award 2025, organized by Investortrust.
These accolades were conferred in acknowledgment of Astra Agro’s steadfast commitment to carbon emission management and the transparency in its emission reduction reporting.
Professor Roy Sembel, Distinguished Chair for Finance and Investment at IPMI International Business School and Chairman of the Jury, expressed, “We extend our utmost appreciation to the 95 companies that have demonstrated their commitment to implementing and reporting emission reductions.” This statement was made during the award ceremony held at the Sultan Hotel in Jakarta on April 29, 2025.
Professor Sidharta Utama, a member of the Jury and a Professor at the Faculty of Economics & Business, University of Indonesia, further emphasized that the award recognizes companies that have significantly contributed to national and global decarbonization initiatives while maintaining transparency in carbon emission management.
Dian Ary Kurniawan, the Climate & Conservation Management Manager of Astra Agro, reported that the company is currently implementing various programs aimed at fostering environmentally sustainable business practices. In 2024 alone, Astra Agro successfully reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 126.33 kilotons of CO2.
“Astra Agro has established two methane capture facilities in Riau Province,” explained Dian Ary, who represented the management during the award presentation. This technology is designed to capture methane gas generated from Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME), thereby preventing its release into the atmosphere. Additionally, this facility contributes to the generation of New Renewable Energy (EBT) that is utilized in the company’s operations.
Other initiatives undertaken by Astra Agro, according to Dian Ary, include the development of a new POME Application Land area covering 517 hectares, aimed at replacing chemical fertilizers with organic alternatives. Furthermore, the company has managed to save 200,000 litres of diesel for its Water Management System by upgrading pump capacities.
Additionally, Astra Agro has decreased coal consumption by 18,770 tonnes by substituting coal with palm kernel shells and enhanced mangrove areas through the planting of 24,900 trees across 4.05 hectares. A 25% reduction in NPK fertilizer usage has also been achieved over 50,000 hectares of mineral land throughout 2024.
As a result of these comprehensive efforts, Astra Agro has successfully reduced emission intensity by 19.56% compared to 2023. “This initiative is part of our commitment as outlined in Astra Agro Sustainability Aspirations 2030,” stated Dian Ary.
Hanafi Sofyan Guciano, Director of the Center for Sustainability at the International Islamic University of Indonesia and Founder of Carbon Initiative Indonesia, who also served as a judge at the event, remarked, “We commend the dedication, innovation, and commitment of all participants in fostering a more transparent and environmentally responsible business culture. It is our hope that this award will inspire enterprises to enhance their active role in the sustainability agenda.”
Through the establishment of these awards, Investortrust aims to promote more transparency and proactive practices in emissions reporting among companies, thereby significantly contributing to Indonesia’s decarbonization objectives.
