Amid the various challenges currently faced by the national palm oil industry, PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk (AALI) remains steadfast in its commitment to enhancing research and development (R&D) initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable operations.
A significant advancement anticipated in 2024 is the establishment of a methane capture facility. This initiative represents a strategic effort to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to promote the efficiency of renewable energy sources.
This undertaking aligns with the company’s dedication to the Astra Agro Sustainability Aspirations 2030, which prioritizes the reduction of GHG emissions, the promotion of diversity and inclusivity, and the enhancement of positive contributions to local and the broader Indonesian communities.
This year, Astra Agro has successfully established two methane capture units in Riau Province.
This advanced technology is designed to capture methane gas emitted from Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME), thereby preventing the release of this environmentally harmful gas into the atmosphere.
In addition to mitigating emissions, these facilities generate renewable energy that can be utilized within the company’s operational processes.
“Methane capture can potentially reduce methane gas emissions from POME to nearly zero. Furthermore, we are optimizing the Warehouse Management System (WMS) to enhance operational efficiency. To date, Astra Agro has achieved a reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions amounting to 126.33 kilotons of carbon dioxide equivalent,” stated Astra Agro President Director Djap Tet Fa.
In addition to its focus on emission reduction technologies, Astra Agro is committed to implementing replanting initiatives. By the year 2024, the company plans to have replanted 5,052 hectares, reflecting an annual increase of 7% (year-over-year), employing superior seeds developed by its internal research and development team.
This initiative represents a significant step towards enhancing land productivity while preserving the ecological balance.
Moreover, Astra Agro is committed to utilize technological innovations, such as the Drone Monitoring System (DMS), which is seamlessly integrated with a real-time monitoring control room.
This advanced technology facilitates the efficiency of monitoring and expedites the decision-making process across all operational sectors of the organization.
Through persistent innovation, which includes investments in methane capture facilities, Astra Agro reaffirms its dedication to becoming a more environmentally sustainable plantation enterprise and actively contributing to the sustainable development of Indonesia.
