Amidst the lush green plantations and the warmth of Waru soil, a new hope blossoms with every drop of kelulut honey. What began as an individual endeavor has now transformed into a thriving source of livelihood for the farmers of the Mandiri Sejahtera Group.
With unwavering support from PT Waru Kaltim Plantation (WKP) in Waru District, Penajam Paser Utara Regency (PPU), a subsidiary of PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk. (AALI), their vision is being realized. Beyond financial assistance, PT WKP provides knowledge, guidance, and essential facilities, enabling the dreams of stingless bee honey farmers to flourish like the blossoms that provide their nectar.
This inspiring journey started with a simple yet powerful determination. In the outskirts of Waru, the Mandiri Sejahtera Group began with a singular dream: to harness the potential of kelulut honey as a promising source of livelihood.
M Ruslim, Chairman of the Mandiri Sejahtera Group, lights up with enthusiasm as he reflects on his journey. “Initially, I ran this stingless bee honey business alone, but after connecting with friends, we united to develop it further for greater benefit,” he shared.
For context, kelulut honey is produced by stingless bees from the genus Trigona or Meliponini. Unlike honey from regular bees (Apis), kelulut honey has a more liquid texture, a delightful sour-sweet taste, and a unique aroma.
However, the path to developing this business has not been without its challenges. Each step brought new obstacles, and without adequate support, this grand dream could have faltered. Fortunately, PT WKP recognized the immense potential of stingless bee honey farmers and stepped in with real support to ensure the business thrives.
With financial assistance, technical guidance, and essential equipment, farmers now have greater opportunities to enhance their production. “Initially, we only had 14 logs (bee colonies).” With the help of PT WKP, they expanded to 19 logs. “Despite challenges like extreme heat damaging some colonies, we remained steadfast,” Ruslim shared.
Their struggle faced unpredictable weather, yet their spirit never wavered. “Before, we needed to spend around Rp 850,000 to purchase materials ourselves. With PT WKP’s support, we received wood for logs, honey collection plastic, and various other necessities. That has been incredibly helpful for us,” Ruslim expressed.
He envisions a future where this business can grow and yield even greater benefits for the surrounding environment. Currently, around 20 bottles of kelulut honey are ready for sale each month, priced at Rp 100,000 per 150 ml bottle. This venture not only provides economic benefits but symbolizes struggle and perseverance.
“Our production could be higher if the weather cooperates. However, our priority is maintaining quality and continuing to grow,” he emphasized. For PT WKP, the success of these stingless bee honey farmers illustrates that even small support can ignite significant change. Their commitment to local economic empowerment is an investment in both businesses and the community’s future.
“We are proud to be a part of their journey. This isn’t just business; it’s a shared mission to create a positive impact on the environment and society,” said Eko Andrianto, Administrator of PT WKP.
Now, kelulut honey stands as a testament to hard work, hope, and a brighter future. Behind every drop of sweet honey lies the promise that the synergy between companies and communities can lead to meaningful sustainability.
