In a small part of Mekar Sari Village, Lirik Subdistrict, Indragiri Hulu Regency, Riau, the lively sound of laying ducks has become a part of the daily life of an Elderly Farmers Group. This initiative, launched by PT Tunggal Perkasa Plantations (PT TPP)—part of the Astra Agro Lestari group, which focuses on oil palm plantations—transcends raising livestock. Through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, it has ignited a powerful hope for elderly farmers eager to embrace productivity and purpose in their golden years.
In May 2024, PT TPP provided an initial capital of 50 duck breeds and one cage to a group of farmers. Additionally, the company supplied feed regularly for the first three months until the ducks began laying eggs. As a result, the farmer group members are not only enjoying a successful egg harvest but have also been able to expand their business independently.
Ngadino, Chairperson of the Elderly Farmers Group, still remembers clearly the moment when the first eggs began to appear. “It was like seeing new hope. We are grateful, this program has really helped improve our welfare,” he says with a glimmering eyes. This success has allowed them to purchase 50 additional fingerlings and construct a new cage independently.
Maswira, one of the group members, feels the same way. According to him, now it’s not just them who benefit, but also the surrounding villagers.
“There are already farmers from neighboring villages who come to learn here. We are proud to be able to share our experiences and inspire others,” Maswira said enthusiastically.
In response to the enthusiasm shown, PT TPP reaffirmed its commitment. On February 21, 2025, Panji Eka Wisnuaji, CSR Assistant at PT TPP, along with Rangga Putradi Ahdim, Sustainability Assistant, returned to deliver additional feed aid for the ducklings.
“We want to make sure this program continues to grow. If needed, we are ready to facilitate training or workshops with related agencies,” said Wisnu.
In accordance with Astra Agro Lestari’s vision through the Astra Kreatif Program, this initiative not only provides economic support but also fosters a stronger relationship between the company and the community. The success of the Mekar Sari Village Elderly Farmers Group is clear evidence that community-based empowerment can lead to sustainable change.
Those who once cultivated crops solely for their daily needs now operate a business that offers greater benefits to the community. Through a spirit of togetherness and ongoing support, a small cage in Mekar Sari has transformed into a symbol of hope for many people.
