Sustainable Oil Palm Industry With the issue of global warming becoming a matter of major concern for the international community, the Company is intensifying its commitment to achieving a sustainable oil palm business. Concern for the environment and awareness of safety issues has become an integral part of all of the Company’s activities, both in its plantations and its processing facilities.
Astra Go Green The Company has established the Astra Go Green standards as its internal standards for the management of Environmental and Workplace Safety (LK3). Reforestation activities have been specially announced in 2008 through the “Go Green” program, with concept of one employee planting one tree.
Good Agricultural Practices Good agricultural practices begin at the initiation of agricultural activity, with the implementation of a zero burning system for land clearing, with the development of a terracing system on hilly land at the planting stage, and with the control of pests through an integrated environmentally friendly system.
Environmentally Friendly With regard to the global warming issue incessantly announced internationally, the participation of the plantation in the efforts to prevent global warming effects is done through conducting preservation, pollution prevention and reforesting. Conservation activities in the plantation sites are performed through HCVF program, while pollution prevention is activated through the participation of the company in the PROPER program sponsored by the government.
High Conservation Value Forest (HCVF) Program This is a concept used internationally to assess the interaction of plantations with the physical, biological and social environment in developing and managing oil palm plantation continuously. The company has established compulsory HCVF identification for new plantation areas (development areas) prior to land clearing, so that the areas that have to be conserved can still be maintained.
Proper Program Is one of the attempts done by the Ministry of Environment (KLH) to push the structuring of the company in the environment management by means of incentive information instruments for companies with good performance and disincentive for companies with bad performance. From 4 companies participating in PROPER, 1 company obtained green ranking, and 3 obtained blue ranking. | | | | |
