Mamuju Utara, West Sulawesi – Every 5th of June is a day used by United Nations to stimulate worldwide awareness of environmental issues. To commemorate World Environment Day, PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk was conducting event called Astra Mangrove Conservation (AMC) in Kabupaten (Regency) Mamuju Utara, Province of West Sulawesi. With the theme is “Mangrove Conservation to Protect the Earth from Global Warming”, about 66,000 mangrove seeds planted along area of 8,500 meters.

Astra Mangrove Conservation is aim to stimulate awareness of the people regarding environmental preservation program, especially in the coastal area. The mangrove swamps play a very important role in stabilizing coastal areas, attenuating seawater intrusion, breaking storm energy, producing nutrients, providing timber and fodder, and creating breeding grounds for variety of fish and shellfish species.
There are many benefits gained through Astra Mangrove Conservation (AMC) program. Firstly, benefit for the environment such as maintaining quality of water, nutrient water, and soil fertility due to the deposition of mud. The mangrove conservation programs are also useful for carbon absorption. Secondly, Astra Mangrove Conservation (AMC) program is also beneficially for the community. The program is aim to protect the settlements around coastal area, and also as a source of income for the surrounding people.
Astra Mangrove Conservation (AMC) program is a commitment of the company to develop sustainable plantation through the motto: “Profit for People and Planet (3P)”. The company will continuing the conservation program in order to give benefit for the future generation.(TM)
