A Safe and Healthy Workplace


The Company implemented a policy on Environment, Safety and Health at Work (LK3) through the implementation of programs on Safety and Health at Work (K3) as a concrete way to improve the safety of employees, prevent accidents in the workplace and work-related diseases while at the same time provided a sense of security to all employees and all parties involved in the work process in the Company. This commitment is presented in the Collective Labor Agreement (PKB) by mentioning articles on K3. [G4-LA8]

The Company seeks to minimize the occurrence of unsafe actions and minimize unsafe conditions to prevent the occurrence of accidents at work. Routine inspections and sustainable improvements are made to maintain and increase the safety at work. In addition, the Company seeks to ensure that the K3 provisions are obeyed and implemented by any parties through the following measures:

a. The Company provides infrastructure facilities on safety at work in accordance with results of the danger identification and risk assessments. The infrastructure facilities on safety at work are as follows: [G4-LA7]

Personal Protective Equipment for every personnel which is customized with risks in the respective working area. Every employee receives the personal protective equipment which is customized with risks and danger in the respective working area.

Signage of hazard warning is installed in strategic areas by fitting the risks caused and referring to the danger identification.

Emergency Equipment such as fire hydrants, fire extinguishers, fire trucks, and ambulances.

b. The Company held training to enhance employees’ awareness on the importance of health and safety at work: [G4-LA9]

The Company regularly communicate promotes safety at work in all departments fitting the existing dangers and risks. This communication is by using safety video media and roll call every morning.

The Company also held in-class training on Safety at Work and refreshment training in every department.

c. In order to enhance compliance to regulations on safety at work, the Company conducted regular inspections and K3 raids to minimize unsafe conditions and unsafe actions. Any inspection is intended to encourage improvements and eliminate dangerous conditions in the Company’s environment, while regulations on safety at work. Any employee may give a warning to violators of safety at work by writing on the safety card and reporting it to the safety department. In 2015, the Company issued letters of reprimands to 1,260 employees violated regulations on safety, including 29 employees received warning letters and one employee was terminated of his/her of employment.

The Company took care of fire extinguisher facilities (fire trucks and dry-chemical fire extinguishers) so that they are always ready and safe to use, reliable, and meet principles of the Environment, Safety, and Health at Work.

Representatives of each department are involved in the Supervisory Committee of Safety and Health at Work (P2K3). The number of workers’ representation in PSK3 is proportional  to the number of workers in the respective department and with a minimum of 2 persons from each department. In 2015, the number of workers’ representative in P2K3 was 1,086 persons. [G4-LA5]

The Government of the Republic of Indonesia through the Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration presented awards to 4 subsidiaries for their achievements in the Zero Accident throughout 2015, namely to: (1) PT Karya Tanah Subur; (2) PT Kimia Tirta Utama; (3) PT Ekadura Indonesia, and (4) PT Pasangkayu.

To anticipate fire risks, fire preventing and extinguishing facilities such as dry-chemical fire extinguisher and fire trucks up to their standards under regular maintenance and periodic inspection in order to ensure their readiness at anytime required. Training on fire prevention and extinguishing was held regularly to improve any personnel’s preparedness in fighting fire. In 2015, there were 40 fire trucks that were ready for use in emergencies. The Company adopts a policy in handling emergencies, which is based on the awareness that Indonesia is geographically located along the Pacific ring of fire which is prone to natural disasters such as flooding, earthquakes, etc. The guidelines prepared cover a standard procedure and the Emergency Response Team (TKTD) specially established to deal with emergencies. The Company seeks to improve employees’ health by promoting good work habits and maintaining or increasing health quality in the working environment. The Company implements various policies to prevent occurring work-related diseases and at the same time seeks to keep employees and their families in good health. Any employee suffering health problems or illness receives medication or medical care in a hospital with costs fully covered by the Company.

The Company’s promotional and preventive activities are designed according to results of employees’ periodic medical check-ups to monitor employees’ health. As such, activities will be more effective and efficient. The Company carried out medical check-up, especially for employees working in risky areas based on the arising risks. In the event that signs of health deterioration are found at a certain threshold, any employee may be transferred to another department that is not risky. [G4-LA7]

Promotional and preventive programs carried out in 2015 were as follows:

Health counseling

Health counseling at workplace was conducted according to results of identification of health at work, data of employees’ visits to the polyclinics, and results of medical check-ups. Counseling has a function to check-ups. Counseling has a function of build the awareness of health hazards as work-related risks to be anticipated by employees.

Health counseling was also conducted in housing compounds, for 10 most prevalent diseases and contagious diseases such as: (1) Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (URI); (2) gastritis; (3) skin; (4) fatigue (muscles and tissues); (5) tooth and mouth; (6) diarrhea; (7) otolaryngology; (8) cephalgia: (9) eyes; and (10) hypertension. Health counseling also promotes a Hygienic and Healthy Life Style (PHBS) to maintain and improve the health of communities in the plantation. [G4-LA8]

The Maternal and Child Health Program which is important due to a quite large population and conditions of mothers and children vulnerable to diseases. This program consists of:

o Integrated Service Posts (Posyandu)

The Company encourages Posyandu activities among the employees as an effort to raise employee’s awareness of the Hygienic and Healthy  Life Style, improve the health of mothers and children, prevent possible epidemics, and provide the basic healthcare and family planning. In 2015, the Company supported 351 internal Posyandu, including cadre development, provision of supplemental food, and health counseling. [G4-LA8]

o Day Care Centers

A Day Care Center is a free facility provided by the Company to employees where children are taken employees where children are taken care in order employees to work without being in order employees work without being disturbed by and worrying about their children. The Company provided 313 Day Care Centers where each is managed by a nurse and some of the Centers have

o Family Planning Program (KB)

The Company supports the Family Planning program in cooperation with BKKBN (National Population and Family Planning Board). The Company provided clinics to serve employees and communities interested in KB. There are 2727 plantation polyclinics recommended by BKKBN to serve the KB program. In 2015, the Company was appreciated by BKKBN as a company having a high commitment in supporting the Family Planning program at the Provincial, and Regency levels. The Family Planning program is program is form prosperous families through birth control. The KB program was promoted by the government since 1970s and is 1970s and is successful in controlling Indonesia’s population growth rate. [G4-LA8]

The Company provided healthcare in the workplace by providing Plantation Polyclinics with standard buildings, facilities, and services aiming at reducing the morbidity rate and minimizing employees’ ineffective workdays due to illness. In 2015, the Company had 29 plantation polyclinics and 8 first aid clinics. The Company has 60 units of ambulances to bring patients whom were referred to hospitals having collaboration with the Company. Health facilities in the Company are supported by professional medical staff comprising 24 physicians assisted by 57 midwives and 81 nurses. [G4-LA8]
